Two sports, one summer, 40 weeks. There is no “cheer season.” it’s always cheer season. That is the time and dedication that it takes to be a Varsity Cheerleader. This year, 11 talented and committed young ladies took on that challenge and succeeded. Not only did this year consist of the usual tasks, such as endless stunt practices, summer workouts, three-day intensive-training camps, and 7:00 a.m. practices, but exciting and new opportunities presented themselves throughout the year. The girls had the honor of cheering our football team on to a C.I.F. championship, supporting our girls and boys basketball teams during C.I.F. playoffs, and performing and cheering in the Fourth of July parade, ring ceremony, and school-wide dignity-and-respect pep rally. They did all of this with the pride and spirit one would expect from a cheerleader, consistently trying to be a good role model for the young girls watching them, and keeping their grades and academic work at an above average level. Approximately 80 percent of the team was on the honor roll throughout the year. Many of the girls received multiple academic awards and were involved in various extra-curricular activities. As a coach, I could not have asked for more from this group of girls. I am so proud of all that they have accomplished and I am excited to celebrate the end of a wonderful year. We could not have done it without the help of our amazing sponsors. This year we had the privilege of receiving Championship C.I.F. Bows to commemorate the football team’s victorious season, all thanks to the generous sponsors at Island Toys and Island Threadz. We will also have the opportunity to reminisce on all this year consisted of thanks to Steve’s Steakhouse and their amazing help in organizing our end-of-the-year banquet. Finally, there were multiple sponsors throughout the year which made it possible to go to camp, order uniforms, and go on road trips. The Cheer Team appreciates and are so grateful to these sponsors: The Avalon Lion’s Club, Catalina Express, Santa Catalina Island Company, and everyone who came by our various (and slightly annoying- what can I say, we are persistent) bake sales throughout the year. We really appreciate this island community for your continuous support of the Varsity Cheer Team. We are excited to launch into a new year and, as always, will do everything we can to make our teams, our families, and our town proud. Go Lancers!
