Lancers Hoopsters Are Heading In The Right Direction

Lancers Hoopsters Are Heading In The Right Direction

By Coach Steve Hall

The Avalon Boys Basket ball team has begun league play and the Lancers have gotten off to a good start so far. After dropping a close game to Sage Hill by a score of 47-44 at home in their final preseason game, the Lancers felt ready and prepared going into league competition. Avalon had already played Sage Hill earlier in the year and lost by 33 points. This time was much different however, the Lancers showed they are a much improved team. They had a real balanced scoring attack in this game with Julio Hernandez scoring 12 points, Danny Jimenez adding 11 points, Oscar Bastida contributing 8 points, while Jose Silva had 7 points and Ernesto Gomez scored 6 points. This was quite a team effort!

Then on Friday, January 16, the Lancers traveled to Walnut, California, to compete against Southlands Christian in their league opener. On Friday, the Lancers jumped out to an early lead and kept it until the 4th quarter. Unfortunately, they hit a cold spurt and the Eagles got back into the game. However in the end, Avalon emerged victorious by a score of 56-49.

Danny Jimenez led Avalon with 23 points and four steals. Jose Silva had 11 points and Oscar Bastida added 10 points to the cause. Miguel Bonilla came in to hit two important 3-point shots. On Saturday, Avalon played much better, but so did Southlands Christian. This game was played at a much higher level and I’m sure the fans appreciated that. This was a stressful game for the Lancers because they had three key players in foul trouble the entire game: Danny Jimenez, Jose Silva, and Ernesto Gomez. Jimenez and Gomez both fouled out in the 4th quarter, leaving Avalon with only five players. Luckily, Silva avoided his 5th foul and the Lancers pulled away in the end for 67-43 victory.

Silva made 11 of 13 freethrows and finished with 15 points, eight assists, and eight rebounds. Danny Jimenez also had 15 points, and five rebounds. The game ball however has to go to Miguel Bonilla who led Avalon with 19 points and four steals. Bonilla played the best game of his young career, as did Harrison Hobbs, who contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds to the cause. The Lancers will travel to the San Fernando Valley on Saturday, January 24,h to play their next game against Vaughn High School in a non-leauge contest. The Lancers played Vaughn earlier in the season in the Catalina Classic and lost 69-57, mostly due to too many turnovers. The Lancers have improved in that area and look forward to having another chance at their new non-league rival. Avalon returns home to played three important league games against TVT on Tuesday , Januarary 27, at 5:30 p.m., and Webb on Friday, January 30, at 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, January 31, at 2:00 p.m. We will honor our graduating senior Danny Jimenez in a brief pregame ceremony before Friday night’s game. We will also have our annual free throw contest between the Lions Club and the Rotary Club during the halftime of Friday’s game.

Please come on up and support your local basketball student/athletes in their quest for a playoff berth in the 2014-2015 C.I.F Southern Section Tournament. Show us some of that
