The Avalon Lady Lancers Basketball team took home the Express League title on Wednesday, February 11, against TVT. This is Avalon’s first League championship in women’s basketball ever.
When getting the opportunity to play in the Express League the Lady Lancers were chomping at the bit to show their dominance. And dominate they did going 7-1, averaging 57 points a game, winning by an average margin of 25, and with their only loss being an unfortunate forfeit. Avalon is poised to make some noise in the CIF Southern Section, Div 5A, playoffs. The Lady Lancers ended the season 15-9 and ranked 5th in the division with a first round bye.
“We really challenged ourselves against ranked, bigger schools, and feel as though that has helped us to be playoff ready,” said Coach Hart. Another reason Avalon will make a run for the CIF Championship is senior, Joanna Chavoya. Joanna was a freshman who played for the Lady Lancers when they made the finals in 2012. This year she is leading the team back with a 23-point-a-game average, first on the team in steals, second on the team with rebounding and assits.
Other players to look out for is point guard Taryn Minuto, high-flying rebounder Carly Glass, and up-and-coming freshman Madeline Hiniker. Overall this team is loaded with hard working, role players who would do anything for the other players. “Team wise, this might be the best overall team I have ever had,” said coach Hart. “They truly work together, they are phenomenal students, and simply great kids.”
You can catch the Lady Lancers in the second round of playoffs here in Avalon. This Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at the High School Gymnasium. Avalon would love your support.
