Danny Jimenez was not only the man of the night before the game even started, but he also managed to keep the spotlight on himself throughout the game as well. In Avalon’s biggest game of the season thus far, the Lancers came out and played some of their best basketball of the year in their first ever league contest against Webb High School. The Lancers came into the game one game behind the first place Eagles and not very confident after a poor showing against TVT earlier in the week. However, the Lancers, inspired by a large crowd and a pre-game ceremony honoring Jimenez on Senior Night, came out ready to play and stayed right with the Eagles throughout the first two quarters.
Avalon led at halftime, 20-18, and the two teams were tied at the end of the third quarter, 30-30. Both teams caught fire in the 4th quarter and put on quite a show for the crowd. Jimenez carried the Lancers on his back the entire game, scoring 35 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and garnering five steals. He was all over the court. On the defensive end of the court, the Lancers had a total team effort led by Ernesto Gomez, Julio Hernandez, Harrison Hobbs, and Emmanuel Amezcua. Avalon prevailed in the end by a score of 43-42, with Jimenez scoring 15 points in the 4th quarter. This was quite a performance!
The victory put the Lancers right in the middle of a league championship battle the following day against the same team. This time the Lancers started slowly and trailed 15-9 at the end of the 1st quarter. They also trailed at halftime, 25-21, and then all of a sudden exploded in the 3rd quarter, scoring 27 points and taking a 48-41 lead. The 4th quarter continued in the same fashion with both teams scoring at will. Unfortunately, Avalon got into foul trouble and Webb came roaring back to take a 3-point lead with 10 seconds remaining in the game.
The Lancers called timeout and designed a play for their senior superstar and once again Jimenez came through, draining a picture perfect 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Unfortunately, Avalon ran out of gas and players at the end of the game and succumbed to Webb by a score of 79-75.
This was a game for the ages and everyone walked out of the gym exhausted after two days of wonderful basketball. Jimenez scored 40 points in this one, breaking an all-time school record for most points scored (75) in back-to-back games. He was supported by Emmanuel Amezcua with 15 points on five 3 pointers, Julio Hernandez with 8 points and five assists and Ruben Martinez with 6 points.
The Lancers next game is Wednesday, February 11, against TVT on the road. This will be an important test for the Lancers as they try to build a case to be accepted into the 2014-2015 C.I.F. Playoffs. Their performance this past weekend makes their case look even stronger. We would like to give a shout out to the Rotary Club and the Lions Club members for their participation in the annual free throw contest at halftime of Friday’s game. Your talent, your generosity and your attendance to the game are much appreciated. Good luck Lancers in your final regular season game.
