Last Friday, September 4, the Avalon Lancers’ Football teams opened up its season with a 58-6 win over Discovery Prep High School. The game was in Avalon’s favor for most of the night, and the heart and focus shined through.
Avalon’s first team offense scored on every possession they had and the second team capped it off with multiple scores of their own. Avalon’s offense tallied up a total of 403 yards.
Senior running back Cesar Ventura led the game with 106 rushing yards and freshman running back Jason Campos also racked up another 78 yards rushing in the second half.
Scoring was a team effort with nine different players contributing. Cesar Ventura had three rushing touchdowns, senior running back Jose Carmen had another two touchdowns, sophomores Jaime Alaniz and Mark Tamayo both added to the touchdowns, alongside junior David Luciano Zeller with his own score. Senior Jason Cisneros had a perfect night kicking going 4/4 on extra-point field goals.
Avalon’s first team defense was relentless allowing minus-28 yards and the second team also doing their part ending the night with 54 total yards allowed by the other team. Senior linebacker Jose Carmen led the defense in tackles and also had an interception returned for a touchdown. Senior defensive end Harrison Hobbs was a constant frustration with multiple hurries, a forced interception and starting the team off with one of the many sacks of the night. On the other end of the line was senior defensive end Javier Martinez who had a great game, constantly in the backfield and racking up 2 points off of a safety.
Come out to see Avalon take on Faith Baptist Academy this Friday, September 11, at Joe Machado Field with kickoff at 5:00 p.m.
