The Las Caballeras, ladies from Catalina, all over California and as far away as Colorado and New York, completed another fabulous Catalina ride and camp out. They are a Catalina Island Conservancy group of horsewomen, and every year they bring their horses to Catalina for their fall get-away.
There was riding, riding, riding, over the hills of Catalina and enjoying the beautiful vistas and ocean views, days were filled with fun!
One day they rode to Two Harbors, and toured the historic Isthmus Yacht Club, which was built as a Civil War barracks. Yes, it was used in the Civil War! Built in 1864, it was home for Company C. Fourth California Volunteer Infantry, which maintained order among the miners, discouraged smuggling of chinese, and guarded the island from Confederate privateers. It has been the Isthmus Yacht Club since 1951.
After a long day’s ride, there were wonderful wranglers to care for the horses. Some of off-the-horse activities to name a few, included the “cowgirl spa” with two masseuses, plus ladies to do manicures, pedicures and facials– even cowgirls can be princesses. They had their own “shopping mall,” the Catalina Island Museum brought out a sampling of their unique gift items to sell, as did the Catalina Island Conservancy. and also their own-brand of Logowear was available. There is always the “No Talent” Talent Show, the Steamy Novel Night, and a silent auction and Blackjack Camp.
Some say the days of riding and camping was “glamping,” glamorous camping. But most importantly it was the camaraderie with friends all enjoying the great outdoors together. At the end of their six day adventure, most say it went too fast and are already looking forward to next year’s camping vacation on Catalina Island with their horses and cowgirl friend.
