Once again, Art Good has brought Jazz Trax to Avalon, and the sounds of smooth jazz can be heard streaming out of the Casino, at Descanso Beach Club and in may bars up and down Front Street. It’s always a treat to islanders and visitors to have so many great jazz musicians performing on the island.
This year’s Jazz Trax kicked off at Descanso Beach, Thursday, October 8, with Grammy nominated Josh Vietti. a violinist, who first began playing at age four, incorporating country, gospel pop, jazz and classical styles into his repertoire. He made his debut last fall, and has returned. He will also play Friday evening, October 16,
On Friday night, the famous father of smooth jazz pianolist Bob James was the opening act at the Casino. James, who is probably best known for his 1987 instrumental theme “Angela” from the sitcom “Taxi,” thrilled the crowd as his fingers danced frantically across the keys, sometime so quickly and sometimes slow, sudden and hard, but it was always smooth. Art Good commented between acts, that perhaps the audience was wondering why James wasn’t the second main act, it was because the younger guys would share hotel rooms and the Bob James group would not.
Speaking of the younger group, they were fabulous too. Vincent Ingala and Jonathan Fritzen both young hot stars of smooth jazz. Ingala gave a lively performance on the saxophone and Fritzen, from Stockholm, Sweden, plays the keyboard and he is fabulous.
The weekend continued with great performances and Jazz Trax will continue this weekend with another array of great jazz musicians. It’s not too late to get tickets,
you can purchase them online, just visit jazztrax.com/jazz/catalina, and you can pick up your tickets at the door.
