Artists from Southern California as well as across the country joined island artists at the 57th Catalina Festival of Art last weekend, September 17th through 20th, an event sponsored by the Catalina Art Association. Artists displayed their colorful paintings and drawings and crafts up and down “Front Street.” It was an excellent array art, and cash prizes and/or ribbons were awarded to artists in the following categories: Fine Art, Photography, Crafts, Jewelry, and Best of Show.
The Festival of Art kicked off Thursday night at the Catalina Chamber of Commerce mixer. The festivities were in the large event tent, where artists and chamber members enjoyed wine and appetizers. Artists displayed their art in booths along the beach on Crescent Avenue beginning on Friday and each day of the event, Each day of the festival there were art demos at the stage. On Saturday afternoon, everyone was treated to a performance by a group of Japanese dancers all dressed in traditional brightly colored kimonos. Friday night the artists attended an VIP artists reception at Overlook Hall where they were wined and dined, entertained, and received announcements from the Catalina Art Association.
Saturday afternoon awards were handed out to the artists. Danny Peterson received top honors, Best of Show!
In the Fine Art category the Best Catalina Scene was awarded to Danny Peterson; 1st Place: Porschia Denning; 2nd Place: Silvio Sylvestri; 3rd Place: Esther WIlliams; and Honorable Mention went to Michael Vargas.
In the Fine Photography category the Best Catalina Scene was awarded to Juan Rodriguez; 1st Place: Bob Kaler; 2nd Place: Carlos Martinez; 3rd Place: Lynette O’Brien; and Honorable Mention was given to Richard Ponce.
In the Fine Crafts category the awards were: 1st Place” Anna Vela; 2nd Place: Barbara Leone; 3rd Place: Christopher Miller; and Honorable Mention: Rita Haupt.
In the Fine Jewelry category the awards were:1st Place: Joyce Watanabe; 2nd Place: Leisa Johnson; 3rd Place: Lisa Stotska; and Honorable Mention: Kristin Wornson.
The annual Kids Art Show, open to kids ages five to 15 years old, had 48 children showing their art work. Although all kids participating received a bag with art supplies and a participation ribbon, there were winners for the various age groups: In the four to five year-old group Jackson Garcia won first place honors, second place went to Nathan Lafleur and in third place was Mateo Perez. Kenedy Arnold received first place for the six to eight year olds, second place was awarded to Sopia Sucundino and Julisa Eseoreno got third place. In the nine to 10 year old group, Manasus Rubio was awarded first place, and second place went to Abigail Rico, and third place went to Madison Schueling. The Special Award went to Virginia Soto for her “Sun on Wave.” All kids that won ribbons for their age group also received a big bag of art supplies.
