Art/Antique Show Wows At Overlook Hall

The first Avalon Antique Show and Sale took place over the weekend, August 19-20, and it will not be the last. Held in conjunction with the 57th Annual Catalina Festival of Art, the show delighted attendees with a dazzling array of items.

Of special note was the Vintage European Poster Company (Vepca), a Berkeley-based dealer of antique posters dating back more than 120 years. Vepca displayed more than 1,000 historic posters of every size and subject, many of great rarity. Dozens of visitors stood entranced as they watched the huge selection unfold. Other dealers offered original Catalina pottery, dreamy beach photography, and a most affordable range of authentic island collectibles.

Amidst all those other temptations, Vepca’s posters were the hit of the show.  Covering such diverse topics as theater to opera, travel to transportation, food, fashion, exhibitions, politics and more, these stunning images were offered for sale with a percentage of proceeds going to the Catalina Island Foundation. This is the first time in memory that such a world-class collection has made its way to the island.

“Overlook Hall is a gem of a facility, and it was a treat to show our posters in such a landmark space,” said Elizabeth Norris, founder of Vepca. “We have exhibited shows all over California for the last eighteen years, and Catalina Island is certainly one of the highlights.”

Also on exhibit were original works by JP Greenwood, well-known photographer and fine artist. A graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, JP’s images have been featured in Vanity Fair, Newsweek, Time, Los Angeles Times Magazine and used in worldwide advertisements for leading companies such as American Express, Morgan Stanley, and T-Mobile.

Business was steady for all dealers during the two-day show, suggesting a real market exists on the island for quality antiques and art.

For its part, Overlook Hall sparkled as host venue and was itself the recipient of many admiring comments. First opened in 1929 as a Christian Science church, Overlook Hall recently underwent a two-year restoration that brought back to life all of its original Florentine beauty. Centrally located in the heart of Avalon, Overlook Hall is ideal for weddings, corporate meetings, Christmas parties, and more.  For more information, please visit or call 310-427-2450.
