One of the charms of the City of Avalon on Catalina Island is that it is steeped in community traditions. One of the Avalon’s most unique, is the Annual Rubber Ducky Derby. Locals and visitors alike adopt ducks for this fun day at the races. Solo ducks are 5 bucks or you can get 5 quackers for 20 smackers, then hundreds of numbered ducks are tossed into the race lane which is out in the harbor, the City of Avalon’s Harbor Department helps the bobbing ducklings to shore. The lucky ducky to land highest up on the beach and stick for a count of 10 is declared the winner! There are two individual heats, a Corporate Race and a Best in Show (best decorated), all on Race Day. The day is topped off with food, music and souvenirs. A great family friendly event at the beach as you cheer along with hundreds of other duck fanatics in hopes that you duck has what it takes to be a winner.
All the monies from this unique event benefit – Kids at Play, Children’s Theater Company.
