Christmas Tree Decorating Contest A Rousing Success

Over fifty community members representing various groups and businesses gathered at Overlook Hall on Sunday, December 6, to compete in the first Avalon Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. Creative ideas, beautiful decorations and original concepts were plenty, and the jury had a tough task in identifying the winners. When the work was done, ten trees glittered with lights, ornaments and stars, and Overlook Hall was a sight to behold. Holiday music filled the air, and Santa and Mrs. Claus were the evening’s extra-special guests.

Participants were instructed to select a theme to promote their organization or celebrate the season, and all did so with great creativity. In the end, the Catalina Island Women’s Forum was announced the winner of the grand prize, a donation from the Catalina Island Foundation in the amount of $1,000. The Catalina Art Association was a close runner-up and awarded $500, while Kids at Play took home $250.

All contest participants received award certificates and prize packages thanks to generous donations from Lloyds of Avalon, Knuckles Swimwear Boutique, and Avalon Library.

To conclude the event, all trees were auctioned off with the proceeds going to designated non-profit beneficiaries.

The event was jointly organized by the Catalina Island Foundation and Overlook Hall to support local non-profit groups and add to the season’s festivities. Judging by the unanimous enthusiasm of all participants, a second annual event is already in the works.

The Catalina Island Foundation (CIF) is a region-of-interest charitable fund that supports community programs on Santa Catalina Island.  CIF’s financial administration is under the auspices of The San Diego Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)-3 organization. CIF was founded in 2014 with the mission of becoming a permanent source of financial support for local youth groups, Scouting programs, sports and performing arts organizations, and similar entities that add to the quality of life on the island.   Originally a Florentine-style church built in 1929, Overlook Hall is now the island’s favorite special events venue unmatched in charm and loveliness.
